Can i get health insurance for Type 1 Diabetes?
I have Type 1 diabetes and at the moment i am covered by my Step-mothers health insurance but in 2010 her insurance runs out for me, is there anyway of getting Health insurance to cover my diabetes except by getting a job that has health insurance as standard?

dont worry about health insurance in 2010..
my dad’s a scientist, he recently discovered an immediate cure for diabetes in rice .. its not like a medicine., just something like additional rice tablets.. you wont even need insulin injections..
so he’s giving samples to my friends and relatives and all of them are cured.. they’ll be out in the world market soon enough..
how high is your blood sugar level?
Yes you can. As you mentioned, a group insurance plan through your employer or college is one way to do it. You will probably have a waiting period before anything involving a pre-existing condition is covered. There is also a plan I have run across in the past offered specifically to diabetics. The premium is based on your A1c levels. Any insurance you buy will eventually cover your diabetes but will probably be more expensive than if you did not have diabetes. Check with an insurance agent. It is the agent’s job to find the best insurance for you. Many states also offer high risk insurance coverage programs. By 2010 the federal government may be offering insurance or subsidies for purchasing it.
In any case, insurance is available for you. Because of the diabetes, it will be more expensive for you to purchase, but you will be able to get it.
You are much better going through an employer. Otherwise it will be expensive and you could be denied. I do know that most states have a “risk pool” for high risk people like yourself. It is a bit more expensive though.
it is good to think ahead because going without insurance is very expensive and chancy. Some insurance companies can also deny you coverage if you have a gap in insurance claiming a “pre existing condition”
Your options for insurance are to be included on a family members plan (which can come with requirements) obtain insurance and benefits from your employer, government assistance (which also has its own requirements to qualify), or Cobra. Cobra is a last resort because with diabetes it can cost $600 a month and only lasts 18 months.
When I left my last job, I couldn’t afford COBRA but I did find a Blue Cross plan that I could afford. (My new job didn’t offer me health insurance so I bought an individual plan.) I have no idea if it is different state to state, but where I live IBC says that if you have a lapse of insurance for less than 60 days (literally 59 days or less), pre-existing conditions are covered. So work or personal, there are options. Of course, who knows by 2010? Good luck!
Sure.
But you will have to pay a LOT for it.
but DO NOT let your current policy run out without getting a replacement first. if you are ALREADY COVERED when you buy a new policy, you are OK, but if you let coverage lapse you may fall under “Prexisting Condition” clause, and that means that a new insurnace company may NOT cover you, or may not cover you for 1-2 years.
And here is a catch-22 — Diabetes affects EVERYTHING. So often, if diabetes is onder the “prexisting” clause, the won’t cover ANYTHING except an accident, because the insurance company will try to say that “diabetes caused” any illenss you might get.
